Text Neck

Text neck syndrome might be something your teenager rolls their eyes at when you mention it, but it’s certainly a real thing. It’s something that plagues many Americans – regardless of age – due to certain habits. At The Healing Touch Chiropractic, we want you to be informed about this syndrome so that you are empowered to avoid it.

What Is Text Neck Syndrome?

Your neck is designed to hold your head upright. Unfortunately, that is not the normal position it’s in when people are leaning over a device. Instead, the head falls forward, which puts several pounds of additional weight on the neck muscles. It’s no surprise that this leads to neck pain, stiffness in the neck and shoulders, tingling or numbness in your arms or hands, headaches, and more. These symptoms are referred to as text neck and they often go away after you get off of your device for a while.

Text Neck Exercises to Ease the Pain

In addition to practicing better posture to avoid neck pain, you can also do neck exercises to build your neck muscles. Yoga is excellent, as it works the whole body. Yoga poses that target the neck include Downward Dog, Cat-Cow, Bow Pose, and Padahastasana. Simple chin tucks can also work wonders.

Try to make these movements a regular part of your life. Doing them each morning and each evening can help reduce overall tension that could contribute to text neck syndrome. Also, take breaks at least every hour when on a device to stretch your neck.

Neck Treatment

While text neck is not a permanent condition, it can lead to some terrible pain and discomfort if it’s not addressed. Visiting a chiropractor can help in many ways. Adjustments and massage therapy are two effective methods for treating text neck. This helps relieve tension, restore alignment, and get the blood flowing to the neck. It can also promote a healthier spine and neck overall, which can better support proper posture. Your chiropractor can walk you through text neck exercises specific to your life, condition, and symptoms.
